How we count
- Words: runs of letters and numbers in any script, found with your browser’s Unicode word segmentation. Hyphenated words and contractions count once (“well-known”, “don’t”), as do numbers like “3.14”. Punctuation, symbols and emoji aren’t words. For languages written without spaces, such as Chinese, Japanese or Thai, counts follow the browser’s dictionary and are approximate.
- Characters: Unicode code points, including spaces and line breaks. Some emoji are made of several code points (👋🏽 = 2, 👨👩👧 = 5); “Visible characters” counts each one once. “Without spaces” also leaves out tabs, line breaks and other whitespace.
- Sentences: end with . ! ? … । or ॥, or at a line break, and must contain a word. Abbreviations like “Mr.”, “Dr.” and “e.g.” don’t end a sentence.
- Paragraphs and lines: every line break starts a new line; lines with text are paragraphs, and blank lines are ignored.
- Times: reading at 200 words per minute and speaking at 130 words per minute — shown to the second under 10 minutes, then to the minute.

Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Words are runs of letters and numbers in any script, found with your browser’s Unicode word segmentation. Hyphenated words and contractions count once (“well-known”, “don’t”). Punctuation, symbols and emoji aren’t words. For languages without spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, counts are approximate.
Are spaces counted as characters?
Both are shown: characters including spaces, and characters without spaces, which also leaves out tabs and line breaks. Characters are Unicode code points; “Visible characters” counts each emoji or combined letter once.
How are sentences and paragraphs counted?
A sentence ends with . ! ? … । or ॥, or at a line break, and must contain at least one word; abbreviations such as “Mr.” and “e.g.” don’t end a sentence. Each line that contains text is a paragraph, and blank lines are ignored.
How are reading and speaking time estimated?
Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and speaking time 130 words per minute. They’re estimates — real speeds depend on the reader and the text.
Does it work with Hindi and other languages?
Yes. Hindi and other Devanagari text, accented letters and most scripts are counted correctly, and the । and ॥ marks end sentences.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
No. Your text is counted in your browser and is not sent anywhere.
